Zenith 6-D-2615 project
#16

Finished the recap...

Got the variac out and brought up voltage slowly....nothing....a little more.....nothing... nothing...arrrgg.  No tubes lit up so first suspect was filament heater in one of the tubes (yes I did check them all before but...perhaps I missed one?) and that was what it was, the 14C7 tube was replaced and the radio was playing.  Did an alignment and all was good most of the time but the modulation tone would cut out from time to time as I aligned it, like a loose connection.  After some poking around I think I found the culprit

Yes I know the cap looks crappy and I thought about pulling its except it not a nice Philco tuner held in there with a few screws, its a Zenith tuner and they had some type of soldered on/fold over tab arrangement.  I figured I should get it running first and then tackle that if there was a problem.  If there was ever unobtanium I think this might be it.  Looking for suggestions on this.  I'm thinking I could
a) add a new replacement trimmer to the circuit under the chassis some how
b) try to get a blob of solder to stick on the two pieces to hold them together
c) get a replacement tuning cap from the zenith store down the street....oh that went out of business a few years ago....maybe a junk chassis if I can find one (update: maybe I can snag the 6D-614W that's on the bay at the moment. Its got the same tuning cap.)

Help?

Too bad the 525 isnt the same... I have a spare radio.
If you find out it is the same, just let me know and its yours.

Question.. Why re-stuff?
I just re-stuffed a Pilot but that is a rare radio. Do you re-stuff radios with branded caps?

Times I have been electrocuted in 2021
As of 1/01/2021

Yes the restuff on this one used the zenith branded caps that were still in the radio. I just like to to keep it as original looking as I can, when I can and since I only work on a few radios a year I have the time to do it.

Thanks for the offer but its a different tuning cap.

I finally got back to this project.  Trimmer F is the one that was broken and after cleaning up some of the rust, moving the broken piece to overlap the tuner frame and putting the trim screw back in, I was able to get pretty clear stations.  The osc alignment is a little off but its one of the clearest and loudest sets I've worked on.  Not a great fix but it will do for now.

The cabinet got stripped, toned, the black quarter inch stripe on the top added back and then lacquered and rubbed out.  My repair of the missing veneer chip on the front is not the best but better than no repair I think.  The back is a reproduction from Retro-tronics, mine was missing completely.
