Last 2 chips are filled. There are some edge issues but they are too close to the edge to veneer.

Its all yours Ron...

Five months later...the saga continues.

It's October and the weather could turn cool at any time, although it is not supposed to this week. So...I decided to try and finish up that 42-788 cabinet.

It still had a lot of fleabites on the left, right, and top back edges. I decided the easiest thing to do was to just fill those small areas with wood filler.

There was one spot where someone forgot to feather in a piece of veneer, so I just filled the spot with wood filler. Look at the upper edge in the photo below. Yes, I know...but this side isn't going to look the greatest anyway, so why not? It will still be better than how it was when I acquired it.

Back edge of the top...

I've been working on this in my spare time during the past week.

This morning, I took it outside and sprayed two coats of sanding sealer on it. The result:

My plan was to do grain filling this afternoon. But it was not to be. After searching for my old used can of grain filler and enlisting The Boss' help, Debbie found it for me. Well, I had not used it since before we moved to this house three years ago!

Anyway, I opened the can...and what little was left was all dried out. Icon_evil Icon_sad Icon_cry

So I've ordered another can which should be here before the end of the week. Right now the forecasters are calling for similar weather next weekend to what we had this weekend, so I should still be able to do the grain filling and spray lacquer.

No rush, Ron, we're patiently awaiting the final miracle. A week will go fast.
Although if you had any grain, like rice, barley or corn in the house, you can fill a bucket with it and the grain filling would be done.

Mike - I have some products in the refrigerator that contain rice, hops, and barley malt...but I don't think they would work for filling grain on wood...but they might help me forget about it Icon_wink

Well.....grain is beneficial altogether...except rice, when use in excess (contains arsenic) or used in beer as adjunct grains (should be outlawed, especially when used in brewing Guinness). Icon_lol

I received a phone call from Constantines on Monday - they were out of stock on the walnut grain filler I had purchased online. Icon_sad

So, Monday evening, I did some comparison shopping online...and the best combination of price and shipping was at Highland Woodworking in Atlanta.

I ordered a quart can of Behlen Pore-O-Pac filler in Medium Walnut (actually very dark, almost black) on Monday night.

It arrived Thursday. Icon_thumbup

This morning, I opened the can...promptly dripping some of the contents on a rug recently placed at my basement workbench Icon_sad Icon_cry ...and then, remembering the rug was old and intended for use at my workbench, I took the can, 42-788 cabinet, an old rag, some paper towels, an old plastic card, and a putty knife out to the garage. where I had set up my folding table which I use for outdoor cabinet work.

I just finished a little while ago.

Kirk, this time I used your suggestion of a thin rag to rub the filler into the pores instead of using burlap to rub the wood. You're right, I believe it does work better. Icon_thumbup

I also filled the grain of four cabinet legs which are part of a Mid Century end table which I have needed to work on for about three years now. On those, I just rubbed the excess off with the rag instead of using the card, as the surfaces of the legs were more rounded than flat.

I'll find out how well I managed to fill the grain tomorrow, as I plan to sand and then begin spraying toner on the cabinet (and the table legs as well).
