To answer your earlier question about the flying connection(s) - yeah, Zenith did that.

Well, I kind of liked the look of it.. But however .. Another problem cropped up...

The Radio will motorboat at approx 1/2 way on tuning.. For a very small area.. This is on AM band. I do not think it does it on the other bands But I will check..  Also saw this on top of tuning cap that goes from cap to the 6A8 tube..

Doesn't quite look right..

The wire marked L doesn't go anywhere.. Only wraps around other that goes to Grid of the 6A8..

Does the 6A8 Need a shield?

It should have a shield and there is a shield clamp around it..
See Pic...

I think I have the shield.. I will look tomorrow...

I believe the wire is a gimmick wire that you asked about that does not connect to anything. Here is a thread about it on a philco.

I don't think that the 6A8 , [in the first photo] needs a shield as it is metal. please correct me if I am wrong.
If all 6A8 tubes are to be shielded I will do that in the future.

I dont know about the metal ones but the glass is original for the set and does need one.
I would like to know too now, Icon_e_geek

This is the shield if you want it just to have a complete chassis...
4" tall x 1 3/4 wide and fits perfectly over my 6A8

Message me your address Skip..

Regarding the shield if you are using a metal tube and pin 1 of the socket is connected to chassis ground then all is well. Metal tube w/pin 1 not connected to ground needs a shield. Glass tube needs a shield.

Wire L like Mike sez is a gimmick capacitor. In this circuit it's used the couple a little bit of signal from the local oscillator into  the input of the mixer.

Ok pin 1 of the 6A8 is grounded..I will go out and check if this motorboats on all bands or just the Broadcast band..

Skip...
#42

Well, It only does it on Broadcast band. I was able to get rid of it by De-tuning one of the IF cans. Then it went away . All seems OK and I still receive all the stations I did before.. on broadcast band.

Ops I forgot to check the other bands to see if they are OK yet. Hope I didn't move problem ..

Any clues on why this seemed to work?

Ok on shortwave bands it doesn't motorboat. Both SW bands seem to be dead? Not completely but not right either. The alignment procedure is not the greatest.. See below:..

[Image: http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm38/...x6hxwv.jpg]

When I try to align I have to put in a big signal to get it to receive Meaning about -3 to +6 Dbm But with a strong signal like that I get the signal all over band. As I go down in signal strength to about -20 Dbm or so I cannot receive any signal. Also on SW bands the audio is extremely low have to turn up volume to Max and I still can only hear signal weakly..

Hear is schematic..

Ok New development looks like the OSC is not working on the SW bands.. I get 0 volts on pin 5 of the 6A8 when on either SW band. On the Broadcast Band its -9 volts..

Anything I should Check ???

I'd take a close look at the band switch for dirty or broken contacts.  Also check all the coils and caps that get switched in when a SW band is selected (measure all sections of coil # 2 and 3 to check for opens).
