Zeinth Upright with record player
#1

In about 1949-1950 my Dad bought a Zenith Upright with record player, it had the drop down door in the front like a drop front desk, the phonograph had two tone arms, one red and one green one for 78s and one for 33 1/3 records, both looked like snakes. It had criss cross flat brass for the speaker grill.
We used to listen to a guy read the comics on Sunday morning on that radio. Icon_biggrin
Any ideas on which model this might have been and anyone have pictures Icon_confused:
Thanks

1949 sounds about right, Philco was also making phonographs with two tonearms that year (one for 78, the other for LP). I think by 1950, manufacturers were making three speed phonographs with a single tonearm?

That Zenith tonearm was called the "Cobra" because of the snake head design. Later Zenith record changers with single tonearm were called "Cobra-Matic."

There is still a TV shop in town here. Up until before Christmas they had an old, early 1950s Zenith entertainment center in their store window with a TV, AM-FM radio and Cobra-Matic changer. Don't know if they will put it back in their window after the holidays or not.
