Philco 42-321 finished
#1

It sounds nice, and picks up many stations very well! I started by refinishing the cabinet, along with several other wood table radios. It came out very nice. However, the chassis was not easy, as it was full of hard and crumbing old rubber wire insulation, the oscillator coil was bad (it took a while to find that) and the speaker was buzzing. I bought a parts set to obtain the speaker and to check my rewiring. One IF can also had a trimmer capacitor which was not acting right, so I also changed it.

I have approximately $85 in it - $15 for the original, $25 for the parts radio, and $45 for parts and supplies.

I still need to do a better job cleeaning and polishing the knobs - the photos really show that!

I do not know why the photos are cut off, as they show up fine on another forum. You can also go to my Photobucket account (FStephenMasek) to see them.

Stephen,
Very nice job. I think I have one of these waiting to be redone. Even though the set looks simple, they can give you "fits" when issues come up like you had. Rubber wiring is not that bad in a small set, it's the open coils and such that I worry about Icon_smile

Take care,
Gary.

Thanks, Gary! It is the nicest-looking one on the shelf where it now sits.

No, it's not a problem, just during certain condition it could show up. Yes, an internal tube short could do that too. ...morzh — 09:13 AM
