My new Philco 70 cathedral
#1

Got this early 70 recently and just finished detailing the cabinet.  It has a beautiful original finish!  I can't imagine a nicer original 70 out there!  I did the Gojo clean-up (it had a dark grunge all over it), with a quick wipe-down of Howards.  When that dried, I waxed it with Johnson's Paste Wax.  Very happy with how it came out.  I only wish I could do the chassis too, but my 1st grade electronics knowledge won't allow that.....
I've added a photo of the bottom of the cabinet. It shows a date stamp of SEP 17 '8. I didn't know they were building these models that early (1928). Could this cabinet be a leftover for an earlier model?

Looks very nice indeed, Steve.

I take it, you haven't restored the chassis yet?

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

No Mike. Like I said, I'm electronically challenged and at this stage in my life, it's too late to fix that. 20-30 years ago, I wanted all my radios to work. That wish was made easy with a local old school radio guy who fixed them very reasonably. He passed away back then and I paused on my collecting for about 20 years. A couple of years ago, I got the bug again and started adding to the radios I had collected back then. Some have had the chassis done and some not. Right now, I'm content to acquire nice ones and worry about the chassis later.

That's a nice looking set!! congrats!
Chassis looks nice and clean as well. Clearly someone put a new power cord on it at some point.
#5

Thanks Bob. I'm tempted to cut that power cord so no one plugs it in until it's serviced. I'll add a picture of the dated bottom of the cabinet later today.

Added photo of the dated bottom of the cabinet.

Steve, I would not cut that power cord off just yet. I have a feeling this radio may have been restored, at least to some extent. Its a fairly recently installed cord from the looks of it and I doubt anyone would go to the trouble of replacing it without at least installing new filter capacitors.

If you can remove the chassis from the cabinet and take a photo of the underside of the chassis, folks here would be able to tell if any recent restoration work has been done on it.

The speaker plug has not been touched, the wires coming into it seem a bit frayed.
