Low Volume & distortion
#1

My Philco 40-180 starts up at low volume and the voice is slightly distorted . After a couple of minutes volume increases and the radio plays ok. Could this be a tube problem? Thanks foe any help with this.

It could be - but more importantly, have you or someone else replaced all of the paper and electrolytic capacitors? This could be your true problem if these parts have not been replaced.

(Admin note: I moved this topic to "Philco Electronic Restoration" as this is a more appropriate place for it.)

Ron; Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, all of the capcitors have been replaced by me. the tubes are all good. Should I suspect one ofthe mica or silver mica capacitors? If so, what circuit should I look at first and how close do the replacement values of the micas have to be to the values shown on the schematic? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Would not suspect the silver mica caps to begin with.

Always good policy to make basic voltage checks on all the tubes. Otherwise you're working blind. If you're getting healthy voltage readings, then start injecting signals into the RF/IF and audio stages. Logical approach will get to the problem sooner and you will feel like a pro!
