Hi all. Newbie here so hoping to find out some info so I can refurbish a 41-608 code 122 that I just picked up. The electronics are a hot mess. I have the schematics. Purchased new tubes. I need to remove chassis and test capacitors and replace some wires including power cord. Hesitant to plug in at the moment.
Where's a good site to purchase capacitors?
Where can I purchase the string for the tuner (drive cord)? Tips on installation?
Are there station button decals available anywhere?

Bear in mind that these are from the early '40s so they may not have more modern call signs on them. If your dedicated enough you could research what station was on the frequency that the modern one is on now to find it's '40s equivalent.

Hi PhilcoDom, Welcome to the Phorum!
I wouldn't bother testing the capacitors, just change them all except for any mica caps.
Be sure to explore what is available in this Phorum. There is a resources section that has info on where to buy things and a Tech Section with tips on how to do things...sometimes specific and sometimes more general.

Replaced all of the tubes. Added a new power cord and finally plugged the unit in today. All I get is a loud humming sound when turned on. Mananged to tune into a couple of AM stations but still humming loudly. Thoughts why?
Also, when the phono is turned on the needle/arm flash and the turntable does not turn. Thoughts here??
Where to begin with the capacitors...
Not too discouraged yet.

Good start but do yourself a favor don't try to test or play it till the caps are replaced. At that point we can have a look at some of this ancillary stuff.

I just got a 608 too!
Is yours the one with the Beam of light record player?
(it has a funny white plastic snake head on the tone arm).
Dont test it again as was said. I actually had mine testing safely and I got smoke!
Luckily nothing was hurt but that was with only 60% power..

Have not made any progress with it this week.
Looking to order capacitors/condensers but there are so many types available for each uF listed. Can someone point me to a website and recommend capacitor part numbers for these? My dad said for me to order and he would help me replace. I’d be eternally grateful for help with these so I can continue the progress.

you can always use a cap that is rated at a higher voltage and conveniently they sell film caps rated at 600 or 630v for all the caps that are less than 1uF.
I buy them at Just Radios but there are other places as folks have said. Just Radios has some nice tutorial info as well, for example: http://www.justradios.com/captips.html

The two 0.01uF caps labelled as #81 on the Riders schematic should each be a Y2 safety capacitor.
The 8-12-16 uF electrolytics (cap #21) will likely have to be purchased as 3 separate electrolytics and then wired in or it may be possible to stuff them into the existing can after it has been gutted. (I've not worked on a 41-608 so I'm not sure how big that can is). I also don't know the voltage rating for these so you either need to get that info off the existing cap or perhaps someone else here can offer a voltage rating suggestion.
I don't know about the 100uF cap either, I don't see it on the schematic.(if you are looking at cap#58...that is a 100uuF or 100 pF cap...and probably does not need replacing)

Replaced all caps but these. I have replacements but am struggling to know how to install.
Slight hum still in speaker. Three stations on broadcast reception. Not picking up any overseas reception. Gear driven turntable will not spin however I hear motor turning and needle arm lights up.
