Silvertone 4586 Console
#31

Picked up another chassis and speaker last week from a forum member who just happened to have one he was not going to us, so we made a deal.
His is the Colonial 4486 chassis where as mine is the SW 4586 chassis.
I went through it this week and it now plays nice.
This one had a bum power/volume switch and needed a few tubes and a set of caps.
Got a donor switch from a friend and installed it last weekend.
This one has kind of a touchy area down on the low volume end. Tried cleaning it with some switch cleaner, but it did not help much.
Mounted in a very busy corner of the chassis which makes it quite a job to replace.
Might just live with it for now.
Have a question about the doublet antenna hookup on this chassis.
What would be the best hookup for this system.
If I put a single wire on the dbl screw, I get much stronger reception as compared to the ant screw.
There is also a ground screw below the antenna hookups.
2 single wires strung in opposite directions?
Does not have the optional wave trap antenna that was available from Sears for a buck.
Maybe I can get this one put in the cabinet this weekend and concentrate on the other chassis for a while.
Getting nice outside now which makes it harder to get the inside work done.

Hi Murf,
>What would be the best hookup for this system.
The short answer is which ever hookup plays the loudest.
The long answer is that a proper doublet ant will work much better than a single wire. Signals will be stronger and background noise will be less. It needs to be cut to the proper length (for the bcb abt 300' total) and connected w/300 or 450 ohm feed line. The old skool flat tv ant wire works well as it's 300 ohm, can be used for the feed line.

Don't need it unless you need to minimize interference from a strong nearby station.

Don't think 300 ft total is an option.
That would be 150 ft from the center tap both directions.
Have an old double wire (DOUBLEX)Antenna which probably feeds about 4 ft in 2 directions from the center tap.
Problem with that is that it should be mounted to a flat vertical wall or similar.
Single wire has static in the backround

Actually the length of a full wave doublet is 1148' I roughed a 1/4 wave @ 300' (287'). Your four footer is going to be good for the fmbcb.

Wrapped it up.
Seems to be working fine now.
Onto other things.
Guy gave me a Stewart Warner R-137-A.
Will have a couple questions I am sure.
