Starting a new challenge.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...wwpjrl.jpg] This is going to be a real challenge to straighten out.
Notice the added filter can in center upper left side. The tuning cap hits it before you get to 800kz.
Under side. Lot of scabbing took place.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...cchcsu.jpg] The filter can assembly has been bypassed in some sections. I count ten caps in the original can according to schematic. It also has two Philco pots in it.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...5rsqvh.jpg]
The capacitor can that has to be rebuilt along with lots of wire tracing.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...qbaf9u.jpg] Well it will be a fun challenge anyway and at least the coils all have continuity and power trans. is okay.

It also looks like most of the original tubular paper caps are still in it, the numbered brown paper ones with the black tar in the ends, which makes this set a good candidate for restuffing. One good thing about Stromberg Carlson models is if you can find a copy of a factory service folder, and a parts list, they are much like a G.E or RCA set in that they were very well documented with detailed diagrams of parts placement both above and bellow the chassis.

Arran
P.S By luck Nostalgia Air seems to have the factory folder uploaded and not the Readers Digest style service info from the Riders manuals. http://www.nostalgiaair.org/pagesbymodel...021588.pdf

Thanks Arran. That's the factory folder I'll be using. I plan to restuff the numbered paper caps and restore the underside of chassis to original as possible.
Not sure what to do about the Philco pots that is it right now. I did do a test power up with an extra parts speaker not original. Missing the original speaker darn it .
I got sound and could hear a station barely in the back ground. So it was time to dig into it.

Got to start somewhere so decided to start with the bypass can assembly.
Hard to believe they got ten caps in the little can. Going to be a little tricky to restuff.

I saw a few Stromberg speakers on fleabay, whilst looking up info on your model 60, I don't know if the diameter and electrical characteristics were correct however, and the prices on some were somewhat less then realistic. My guess is that the diameter of the speaker in the 60 is similar to the 128H, an 8'' one, but maybe they stuff a 10'' in there to make use of the push pull #42s? In any event one will turn up sooner or later, either in a junker console or at a swap meet, if all else fails see if you can find one that needs the chamois replaced on the outer edge, that will bring the price down.
The capacitor can shouldn't be too bad to restuff, the modern poly film caps are much smaller then the old paper ones, and the terminal board on the base gives you something to mount one end to. What you need is something to fill the empty space inside the can, what I once did with one in a Canadian Westinghouse set was to take one of the original paper caps, and layed it on it's side in the inside top of the can, and then filled the can with a combination of candle wax and tar I salvaged from the can. You could also try gluing some strips of Masonite or thin plywood on the inside of the can to give the terminal board some support and go without the wax or tar.

Arran

Yea Terry I had to use what I had available . For the test that speaker had a newer output trans. that made it easier to wire in.
Finished the bypass cap can today. A lot of wire tracing to get it corrected.
Thanks for the suggestion Arran it went well.

I had to change two resistors in lower left of pic. A 30K & 20K. Both had risen in value almost double their rating.
Picture of that mess.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...hweaad.jpg]
Got rid of the extra can that was on the top of the chassis.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...eyr79z.jpg]
Now to rebuild the original Ecan and trace out the wiring on it.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...1zlopz.jpg].
I made a temporary BC resistor until I get the chassis done and working. The 5000/ohm side was open. Will then order a pair of power resistors to put in.

Put wrong picture in above. Here it is.

Still working on the chassis. Finished the electrolytic can and started on restuffing the paper caps.
Here is one of the caps finished and ready to go back in I was able to salvage the black wax to use on the ends so it maintains the original look.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...i9jhge.jpg] Wile checking resistors found this one open. Its just below the tube socket.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...9tyz1p.jpg]
Well this explains the open reading.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...lgu1da.jpg]
While working on the chassis I noticed another solder tab that looked like one I removed thinking it was an add on. I put the original back in. Its in the lower left corner and bolts to the mica capacitor.
Also three of the paper caps are restuffed and back in. I think they look very original.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...ex4j7v.jpg]
Hope to get the rest of the paper caps done today. Then look into the volume and treble control

Thank you Joe. Here is a progress report.
Finished all the paper capacitors and rebuilt the AC line cap. Added safety caps inside it.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...c9mplm.jpg] Pictures of the little AC line can.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...uwuefx.jpg] [Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...2wqxpr.jpg] [Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...m3tbza.jpg] Done and ready to go back in.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...bvvvd4.jpg] Built a speaker plug for it. Thanks to a Bob Anderson video on rebuilding a Stromberg model 64 it really helped with getting the speaker plug wired correctly. There was a indication on the schematic from the rectifier tube to the choke that I had no idea what it meant. Turned out it was to show a jumper connection in the speaker plug.
Looks like I'll be using the Philco speaker till I can find an original which is an 8 inch job.
It has a 3100 ohm field coil. The schematic has no values for the output or field coil.
It uses two 41 output tubes but I have trouble doing the math on what the field coil should be.
[Image: http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o654...vaduir.jpg] Powered up last night and it came to life.
The Philco controls seem to work with it. The volume control is touchy and will need to be taken apart and looked at. But the sound is good and it picks up stations all across the dial.
Still quite a bit more work to do and need to lace the wiring harness back for neatness.

I maybe doing a Stromberg 60 ( haven't decided yet) but I have the same problem as you in that the speaker is missing! You have already helped as I had no idea of the value of the Field Coil. You said you are using a Philco speaker where did you find one with a 3100 ohm FC? The best I can find is a 2.6k ohm did you add a resistor to make up the difference?

Hi Eric. What I ended up using for testing was an H-7 Its listed as 3275 ohms( DC resistance )on the speaker spread sheet, but mine was reading 3100 ohms. It was used in Philco 14LZX, 15X, 23X, and 91X.
I also had the companion speaker to the H-7 -the K-12, 8 inch - which also is listed as 3275 ohms.
Note; it does not have an output transformer> so I used a universal ot a 125D I think, and installed it in the cabinet. It plays fine. But I don't use it that much. Maybe once a month.
So tell the truth not sure what the exact field coil DC resistance should be. Used the K-12 as it was, with no added resistor.
I was finally able to find a 10 inch Stromberg speaker out of a model 65 that I plan to replace the Philco speaker with. It has a field coil DC resistance of 1060.

I was a little disappointed in the Stromberg info as there is about 4 pages but they don't list the FC! The resistance from 3100 to 1060 is a big drop I wonder if anybody has any info on what belongs there. Not sure I will take it on but if I do your pictures should be of help thanks for posting.

Mike,
Finale got the radio I'm doing it for an older (70) gentleman and it is more of a basket case than I thought but I'm going to give it a shot. Your pictures are going to be a big help I can see that already. My first question concerns the speaker, Did you make a diagram of the hook up? (I see six pins but I figure 2 for the FC and 2 for the output transformer)
I see you used a tube socket for a plug good idea.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Eric I'm going to be looking at changing the speaker in mine as soon as I get a Zenith model 861 finished up.
Will have to look and see if I have a diagram in the file box.
If I can , I'll pull the chassis and speaker tonight and let you know about the wiring. Been awhile and I don't have the greatest memory.

Don't even talk about memory.......
Guess I can't see how they hook it up I have a couple of speakers but their plugs have only three pins. That plug has leads on all 6 pins...
Thanks for looking.
