Super thrift store find! 1963 Philco Model 1652
#1

I was at the thrift store yesterday and stumbled upon this beauty for $10. It was love at first sight so I bought it. Came with all the original documentation and after an initial cleaning and dusting of the internals I found that it works almost perfectly. I haven't been able to find much information about this particular unit online, so if anyone out there has more information I would love to hear it. I'm really interested in the original 1963 price of the unit.

I am having one small problem with the phonograph. It worked ok for about 40 minutes then it became choppy and it seems to have trouble turning. I took it out and the idler wheel looks fine, the record plate is a little hard to turn. I'm thinking to take it apart, clean, and lube. Any other advice you folks might have would be greatly appreciated. I've had a difficult time finding any information on these particular models online.

Here are some pictures:

Wow, nice find! A clean-up and lube job on the phono would be the best place to start. Grease will gum up over time and is also haven for colonies of dust bunnys. Clean off all of the old goo with cotton swabs and lube it up sparingly with some high quality grease.

Yup, that did it. I am currently playing some Cole Porter. It's very awesome.

A very nice find indeed! Congratulations! That's one more saved, and I think this is very important that as many of these wonderful old timers get saved as possible!

Best regards,

I just inherited one of these from my great-grandmother. It even came with a bunch of Gospel Albums, including elvis and lots of local Arkansas gospel groups from the 70's. At first I could not get records to play. But I discovered the needle can be flipped from left to right. From "tsp" to "78" (I'm playing 33 1/3 records). I wonder what the "tsp" stands for.

The radio side works, but the tune knob slips, a lot. making it hard to tune.
