Original, minimum hum??
#1

Please refer to the Philco 47-1230 console radio with Phono, BC, SW, and FM.

The power supply capacitors have been replaced and many of the others, and the level of hum is way down from what it was when I first got this radio to play at all. The volume control has to be turned to about 3/4 before the hum begins to be noticeable.

What would be considered a normal hum level for this vintage radio? Is there a rule-of-thumb to go by? What was the amount of hum in the new radio?

As I recall, the lack of hum in radios did not become common until the transistor age began.

All the sets i recapped has a little just a little at no volume. But none when turned up did you check resistors .

If you didn't modify the original circuit, and replaced all the caps, two additional things come to mind.

1. Try reversing the plug in wall socket.

2. Test your output tubes, they may be gassy.
