Why are 45 tubes so expensive?
#1

I've been pricing tubes on my model 65. Most are $5-10, but the 45's that this set uses for audio amplification are a lot more expensive than the others. Why is this, and is there a substitute for these?

Not sure if I'll need them yet, but I'm trying to get a bandwidth on the rebuild cost for this guy.

Thanks.

45s are in demand by the high end audio folks. That has driven up the price. Used 45s are available for much less than the new ones. You can also make 45 subs from 1619 tubes. I made a couple for my Philco 96.

Kind regards,
Terry

I'd wondered about that.. you can spend anywhere from $20 - $300+ for these from what little checking I've done. So it's a matter of popularity then rather than scarcity.
