Zenith 6-S-147 Chairside
#1

Just acquired this set, and the compartment lid is missing. Does anyone have a close-up of the hinges, and the top of the lid? I'll need to make one and inlay the veneer.

Thanks,

Different model, same cabinet:

It almost looks like the lid does not have a veneer insert. Could it be a solid piece of walnut?

No. I doubt it. I'll have to confirm tomorrow, but solid wood would be expensive and prone to warping.

I don't think so either, in fact the grain looks a lot like Australian walnut, which I have never seen in anything other then veneer form. It looks like ribbon mahogany, except it's sort of a grey-brown colour when unfinished, lots of 1930s radio cabinets used it, Grunow, Brand Z, Rogers, Canadian Westinghouse, C.G.E, probably others.

I'll have to research Austrailian walnut. The only reference I could find to the type of wood, said "Oriental walnut". This pic I received on the other site does show veneer.

It looks like it might be a challange to route out the interior for the veneer.

I'm not 100% certain but I think that Oriental Walnut and Australian Walnut are just different names for the same species of tree, which grows in Queensland. though in that last photo it does look a lot like Australian Walnut. I've also heard another name of "Orientalwood" in some cabinet descriptions from back then, but it may just be a marketing name.

Arran
