Hammerlund HQ-110A

All, Has anyone worked on this receiver.. The dial string seems not to work.. But looking inside its connected but when I spin the Dial nothing What am I missing?

I worked on a '180 eons ago. Best I remember it used a pinch roller to drive the dial. I'd check to see if it's clean and has good traction. Could have a chip in the edge of the dial.

Ok found that the fly wheel on back of knob was loose.. Tightened and works now..

One to recap.. looks like only the Electrolytic needs replacing. All others look like disk caps..

Ok, All Thanks.. The dial problem was the flywheel inside the chassis.. It was loose causing pinch drive to not engage.. After tighting all works as should.. Recapped the Electrolitics.. All other caps are Disc..Checked a few resistors and were in spec..

So I powered up .. At 117 volts draw was .600 Amps .. Radio works but controls are scratchy.. so some cleaning required..

Thats the next step

Received signal generator all bands .. Dial calibration off on some bands..

These are GREAT receivers ! Congratulations. I own an HQ-140X and an HQ-145. When I was a kid back in the 1960s I would get the Allied catalog every year, and the first thing I would do is turn to the section with the Hammarlund receivers. How I would drool, wishing I could afford to buy one. They were the top of the line receivers back in the day, and more expensive than I could afford. many years later i was able to buy 2 of them. They are the best general coverage shortwave listening receivers I have.

All, Anyone have any experience with the s-meter circuit in these Receivers? I cannot get mine to Zero.. I can get close but I run out of adjustment..

Well, After a full alignment The S-meter is now working correctly..Can hear all kinds of signals on 160,80,40 Meters..Some on 20 Meters .. No Signals on 15 meters or 10 Meters Also 6 meters But receives Signal Generator Fine..

Why s-meter started to work correctly .. Who Knows..

Well, After alignment I went back to check it the following day.. The first 3 bands ( 1.8, 3.5 and 7.0 ) were all off again..The other bands were still right on..

So I realigned them again.. Tonight I went to check and they were way off again.. Realigned again..

Any one have a clue as to why they keep going out of alignment ???

PS this is the OSC alignment The RF and ANT were pretty close.. But did drift a little..

hmmm,, i like it!!! ive never seen a clock ilike that before in my life.

to your alignment going wonky,, maybe you should just start replacing resistors.... then see what happens.

Well, It looks like it finally stabilized.. I just checked bands and all are very close.. Have NO Clue WHY..

So i just put it in cabinet and Turned off. I will check it later this evening again after warming up for an hour..

I had the same problem with my HQ-180. I just couldn't get it aligned on all bands. Most troubling was the broadcast band which would never line up with the dial. I ended up taking to a person who is a retired RF engineer. He was able to align it after he replaced a couple capacitors that are in some of the tuning cans and found a wire that was hidden and shorted to ground. He also noted a mistake on the alignment procedure in the service manual.

I don't have the schematic for your radio in front of me, but a couple of things occur to me. There may be condensers involved with the drifting bands that are drifting in value as they heat up. These may be ceramic or mica types. It may also be resistors involved with these particular bands. Look and see what resistors and capacitors are used only for the bands that are causing problems. Since your radio is only single conversion you don't have the problem of first setting a second IF or third IF and aligning backwards toward the front end, but only have the one IF to deal with.
