116B - Your Opinion - All Welcome
#1

But, not necessary to tell me it's my radio "do what I want". If I did that, I would not be asking - -

So I told you all about getting a really nice 116B for $35 on CL the other day. The chassis is done and the cabinet has the first coat of finish lacquer. Now I am waiting (and waiting - -) for the proper Philco decals to come in from RD.

This is how it looks:

It has not been sanded, so it is not smooth. That will come later.

The question I have is about the dark color. It is (now) a real dark walnut - with a slight reddish hue, really only noticeable in bright light. It looks black in room light.

Here is how it looked when found:

It is slightly darker, but not black in bright light. Keep in mind that some "yellowing" of the original finish has made it darker than when it left the factory.

I have never liked the "black" on the shouldered tombstones.

Tough call, but, do you think I should make it darker? It would not take much effort prior to the final finish.

No. No, I don't.

As you know, tinted lacquer always looks lighter in bright sunlight. In spite of the sunlight, I think it looks just fine as is. Icon_thumbup

I like that!

I know NObody is going to argue with "Mr. Philco" Icon_clap

Yeah, right. Icon_rolleyes

Seriously...I'd like to find a Mohawk equivalent to the color you have mixed for the dark portions of Philco tombstones. I do think the color you have come up with is more authentic than the near-black Extra Dark Walnut.

According to the gallery pic, it does not have black.  So, no, I would not make the sides darker. A handsome specimen, it is.

Looks great to me also Russ and I'm sure not going to argue with Ron!

Well, OK then.

Now if the decal would just show up.
