A few monthes ago I recapped/restored a 53-561 the set played great every time I plugged it in, I have a work shop/storage building I keep my radio's in and the other day I plugged it up in the building and nothing, volume was there like an amp with no input so I brought it over to ckeck it out after setting all night it again worked perfect, yet the same original problem after a night in the building. I have come to the conclusion that the cold damp conditions disable the set. has anyone encountered this problem and is there a fix?

For starters wiggle the tubes a bit. Maybe you've got a bad connection. Check to see if the loop antenna is connected to the tuning cap. After that it's time to break out the voltmeter and start poking around.

figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

If you're keeping your radios inside a storage building that is not climate controlled - in other words, it gets cold and damp when it is cold and damp outside, and hot when it is hot outside - you won't have a collection after a few years.

The fix is obvious - get those radios in a dry place where the temperature is kept at a fairly steady level.
