What do I have...
#1

I was given this old Philco cathedral radio and am trying to find out the model and year it was made if possible. There are no markings on the chassis or wooden case that I can see. I hope the pics will tell the story.

I'm sure you guys know...right?

Note from site admin: Sorry, but the photos which were attached to this post are no longer available.

Best regards,
Kico

Hello, and welcome!

You have a Model 84B, the late version from January 1936:

That is an oversized power transformer. Might be a 25 cycle model? If so, it will work on today's 60 cycle line current.

Thanks Ron,

I tested all the tubes and they all check good. I then fired it up on my dim bulb tester...as expected a very loud 60 cycle hum but no smoke Icon_smile...faulty power supply cap I suspect.

Any good links here on the forum for rebuilding one of these?

Thanks again...

Kico

You may want to search this site for similar models like model 80,84,600, 57,37-84.

Thanks Terry,

Whew...there's a lot here. I was wondering if anybody has compiled a component list (caps/resistors, etc.) needed for rebuilding an 84B they could post or send me? My eyes are not what they used to be, and reading the actual and schematic values is difficult. I'd like make sure I have the correct parts before I place an order.

Also, could someone on the forum link me to the correct schematic for this radio...thanks.

Best regards,
Kico

May I suggest you contact Chuck Schwark to obtain the service information package for this radio, which will include an 11 x 17 enlarged schematic, parts list, alignment info, changes, etc., etc.

Well worth the nominal fee.

Hi Ron,
I am working on one of these right now, the exact same cabinet. But the inside label says it's just a model 84. Does the 84B just refer to the style of cabinet, and is not marked so on the blue tag?
I do have another 84 but with the more circular cabinet.

Kico, I posted some photos an info for you on your other thread.

Thanks. Gary.

Hi Gary

Yes, the "B" referred to the style of cabinet; in this case, "B" = Baby Grand - which is how Philco referred to its cathedrals and tombstones back then. The terms "cathedral" and "tombstone" did not come into general use until decades later, as people like us began to collect these radios.

The sticker on the back of the chassis will read "CHASSIS TYPE 84" without mentioning the cabinet style.

Thanks Ron, that clears up the mystery.

Working on the cabinet today, shouldn't be too bad. No veneer or photofinish to worry about.

Take care,
Gary
