Questions on Model 20 cabinet/speaker
#1

Okay, I sort of lucked into this chassis that only needed a couple of tubes to get going again.
The price paid wasn't too bad but it was about as much as the shipping so, I'm limited to what I can put into a speaker/cabinet and not be upside down in the radio.

I didn't acquire it to restore, I just wanted a parts backup for my Grandad's radio. I AM upside down in that radio, but I'm being "philco-sophical" about that.

I can stand pat with what I have and consider it "mission accomplished", but if I could find a speaker/cabinet (even if the cabinet was a little bit dinged up) I think it'd help the value of THAT radio considerably.

So, being an obvious neophyte, what's the path of least economic peril?  Is the speaker the unobtanium in this scenario?  The spread between buying a pretty decently restored radio complete and a cabinet/speaker is surprisingly narrow, at least from where I sit.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.  PM if it's easier.

I just sold a restored 20 speaker for $85.00. An unrestored one in working order will be abnout $40.00-$80.00 online. Funny, The only part I do have is the chassis, lol...

Best of luck and welcome to the Phorum.

Thanks for your reply, Kirk.  I appreciate it.
It's taken me some time to become familiar with the uniqueness of these speakers.

I don't think I necessarily need a "restored" one.  At the prices you cite (and I believe you, especially for the restored one, I presume that cuts down on hum and other issues), I have very little room left before I can just buy a restored radio outright, so I guess I'm just down to boxing this chassis up and storing it for a hypothetical rainy day.

I just thought I'd check.  I thought the speakers and cabinets would both be (considering how many 20's were made) both ubiquitous and inexpensive.

To pull a Vonnegut line out of retirement:  "So it goes".  I'm better off to know what I'm looking at upfront.

If anyone has some unwanted overstock, I have a good place they could call home.

Best Regards to everyone.

If you are wanting to buy a model 20 cabinet or speaker, you need to place an ad in the Wanted Ads section.

Ads are not permitted in this forum. Questions are perfectly fine; therefore this thread has not been moved, deleted, or closed. (The title of the thread has been changed, however.) But please be mindful of the rules. Thank you.

Sorry for the mistake. I didn't see the "Wanted Ads" section. Good to know it's there, thanks.

Perhaps something else to consider is the console cabinet. It's pretty small as they go and you don't see them as often as the baby grand style (table top).

There abt 34" 1/2 tall x 19" wide.
