Philco Television
#1

I just joined the group. When I was very little, approx. 1955-57, we had a Philco television. I assume it was a used set when we got it, money was a little tight in those days. The TV was in a dark wooden case on tall, square, straight legs, and had two doors that could cover the TV when not in use, with dangling handles as I remember. I believe that it a 10 inch screen. Anyway, I have looked endlessly for a Philco TV like that online, and have never seen anything that even slightly resembles it. I used to play with the Philco round plastic brand name disc, as it would turn round and round. Does anyone have any information of this model of Philco Television? Thanks!

Hi. Welcome to the Phorum. This model 49-1040 from 1949 is the only 10" B&W set they made that had long square legs. It does not have doors though.

There is also a slightly larger 12" model 49-1240 that has a door over the controls.

Hey Bob, thanks for the reply. The 49-1040 from 1949 bears some resemblance, but is not the one we had. It may be that our TV had less than a 10" screen, which is what I'm starting to think. But it definately had two doors, and below the screen were the controls and there was a round flat brown "button" in the center that had "PHILCO" on it, and I used to turn it round and round, it was just the maker's label is suppose. I'm stumped. The earliest memory I have of it was probably 1956.

They only made a few 7" models and they were small tabletop sets.

Here's a list of all the models with some photos from the 40s.

If the set was a Philco set at all, sometimes things become conflated in your memories?
