Philco 630 - Static Noise Crackling.
#1

The 630 I rehabbed was playing pretty good. Now it plays well on strong stations but a lot of static on weaker stations and while tuning between them, I probed around with a plastic alignment tool and notice that when I put some pressure on the 2nd IF transformer the Volume decreases and the static lessens. Is this what is known as Silver Mica disease?  The schematic does not document what size capacitors I have in the can. The transformer windings ohm out at 12 ohms. The transformer is a 32-1647. Any idea what size capacitors are in the can? If I ground out the antenna the noise is still there controlled with the volume. Am I correct assuming that the noise then is being generated inside the radio? On strong local stations it is still there but not as pronounced.

hello tludka,
These earlier sets did not have Mica problem

Well, I had the long wire antenna at about 15-foot height. I raised it to 20 feet and that cleaned up 95% of the noise problem.

Might be lighting static crashes you are hearing, they can be heard from long distance in the summer...

I find that interesting! So is the ant over something like a well pump or near the edge of roof. Glad it works. David

Have you cleaned your tuning cap?

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
