Question about double filter capacitor can on a Philco Model 54 AC/ DC radio
#1

Hello everyone,

Sorry, I'm not good with schematics. Could someone take a look at the schematic attached and please tell me if the values of the double can's capacitors are 12 uF and 3 uF? (#15 on the schematic)  Just want to be sure I am correct before I proceed.

Thanks

You are correct. Pay attention to how the can is mounted. There's probably a cardboard or paper sleeve between the clamp and the can keeping the can from chassis ground. Any wires attached to the can terminals are B- connections, not chassis ground.

If the 2 section electrolytic can in your radio proves to be as much of a pain as the one in mine was, rather than trying to re-stuff the original you can make a good looking replica. Here is a link to a thread of mine showing the procedure.

Thanks a lot for the advice RodB.  Yes, it does have a paper sleeve between the can and clamp (see attached pic). I’m going to re-stuff the can, so that raises another question. Since it is B - do I wire the negative (-) of the electrolytic to the can and the positive (+) to the terminal just like you would normally? I was planning on drilling a hole and attaching the negative side of the capacitor to the can with a screw and nut.

Thanks Mike. That looks really nice. I’ll try stuffing the original cans first. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll have a plan B now thanks to you.

You can wire the negatives to the can as long as you remount the can with a nonconductive sleeve where the old one was.

Thanks Rod. Appreciate the help.
