Philco 39-80B Grille Cloth Help
#1

Hello

Appreciate everyone's input, thank you.

Ready to install new Grill Cloth, looking for suggestions on how to proceed and type of glue best to use.

Thanks.

This was split from its original thread into its own thread by admin since the question is dealing with cabinet work.

Hi,

3M Super 77 Adhesive is what most of us use. You spray it on the backing board - never on the cloth itself - and wait a few minutes (the can will tell you how long) before sticking the cloth to the backing board.

You will have to work fast and very carefully, because if you do not place the cloth just right on the board, it will never look right.

If you have never used Super 77, you might practice with some pieces of old cloth and wood or fiber board first until you get a good "feel" for the proper technique.

And as Ron says, NEVER onto the cloth...ask me how I know. Lol!  Icon_redface

Thank you for the good advice.

Will obtain some 3M glue this week and give it a go.

This Philco has certainly increased my interest in old broadcast radio restorations.

And most appreciative to all the willing folks on the Phorum to offer their advice and experience.

Hello Charles. You might want to contact fellow phorum member Mike Koste (ekimetsok). He runs Gobs of Knobs, and can probably help you out. I have used his service in the past and am very pleased with it. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary

Hello:

Just an update on progress.

New knobs as suggested from Gobs of Knobs.

Scratch built Battery eliminator power supply completed and tested today.

Waiting on new Dial Face from RadioDaze should be soon now.

Speaker needs some attention, but think it can be patched up OK.

Would not have attempted to bring this radio back to playing status, if not for the encouragement of this group.

Will soon see if it all works.

Have a good day, ya'll.

Update:
Been a while, too many other projects got in the way.
Today the old Philco 39-80 is once again working fairly well.
Battery Eliminator Power Supply working as hoped.
Rebuilding the chassis overlooked soldering the speaker output lead and one resistor missing, a bit of troubleshooting and the receiver came to life.
Next is to touch up the alignment and get everything back in the cabinet.
Radio will be placed on display in our small local museum.
Regard,
