Philco 38-690 Oscillator coil help needed!
#1

I got a steal of a deal on a beautiful 690. I have restored a dozen radio's (I know, I'm a Rookie) but nothing prepared me for this monster.

My problem is for some reason two of the oscillator coils got really hot and melted all the wax of the windings. One test good still the other is fried. It is coil 36 on the schematics part number 38-2627.

I have rewound other coil before with success, but it was well documented here and on YouTube. I however can't find any info on this one. I'm hoping someone here might have a clue how to rewind this one. If no one has any info I will try slowly unwinding and trying to figure out how it was wound.

I've had this radio for almost a year and after reading Ron's blog a couple times and going through the posts on that model here I decided I would give it a go.

Thanks for any help you all could give.
I have been reading these phorums for years and have always found the help I needed without having to ask.

Welcome to the Phorum, Dan! You've really gotten yourself a plateful with this set, and I envy you. I'm still looking for my '690', but the chase is often more fun in retrospect. Enjoy bringing it back. Before you try unwinding the coil try the needle method first. Slowly drag a needle across the windings and count the "bumps". Others have much more experience with winding than I. We are all happy to help out when we can. Just ask, and please document your journey. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary

There is no such thing as a "bad 38-690".

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Actually it's a 32-2627 and is the same coil use in the 38-116. The '37 model's front end are a little different so coil doesn't carry the same pn but might usable. As for rewinding there are no specs for the procedure so your kinda on your own. I would carefully take it apart and note the wire ga and # of turns. Also direction of the turns are important.
