Philco cathedral #70 - erratic volume
#1

I have recently purchased a #70 (early version) and am about to pull the chassis from the cabinet. My main reason for doing this is to replace the black plastic cord and plug which it came with with some cloth covered cord and a more vintage plug.

It plays well and pulls in quite a few stations with good volume. The only problem which I am having with it is that the volume comes and goes. As a start in trying to locate the problem, I was wondering if there are any components under the chassis which I should check out as a possible cause.

I would welcome suggestions from members of the forum.

Thank you.

Joseph

PS I do have the schematic.

If the set has been serviced and caps and resistors have been replace I'd take a good look at the tubes filaments. See if you have one that is getting dim and bright with the volume.

Also shoot the volume control with deoxit and work it back and forth a few times, and come to think of it, do the tube sockets too, one by one and insert/withdraw each one of them a few times. Let it dry overnight before powering up.
