I had this problem once on a 60 after the secondary on the oscillator coil was rewound. Turns out the winding was backwards.
You might try reversing the secondary connections . That's what I did to determine the fault.

Well am I surprised. I was so careful to make sure I had wound the coil in the proper direction. I now have reception on the whole AM band. The squealing is gone on the shortwave band too. Nothing on the higher end of the shortwave band except a little noise but it is early in the day. I'll check that tonight. Thanks Ed for the reminder of that. I think I will take the coil out and wind it the other way around so that anyone in the future won't have to wonder about that. I may even tackle that antenna coil wire I described in my last post. I found some pretty good directions on the Phorum about that coil. Thank you Terry for all your help.
