They could've felt some mineral deficiency, so they munched on some ceramics.
Plus hard stuff in the stomach might aid digestion by helping to grind other food, like those long fibers from the chewed wiring insulation. People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
