Philco 38-2 Automatic Tuning
#16

The problem has been solved. I forgot to solder one of the 6 volt transformer wires.

Hi dconant, have you received your new dial from Radio Daze yet? I’m curious to know how it looks compared to the original. I have a 37-116 that I recently finished after having it for 11 years. My original dial was cracked so I ordered a new one from them back then but I’m a little disappointed with it as it seems to be darker or more opaque than the original. I have a brighter LED dial light behind it but it’s hard to see the numbers on the dial, maybe it’s my 73 year old eyes! I’m wondering if in the 11 years since I purchased my replacement dial they changed the formula of the dial material and it is now easier to read.

Hi Ron, No I have not. They told me it was ready to ship. I had ordered several other dials of which some were not in stock so I had to wait the 6 week period. They asked if I wanted my 38-2 dial now I said I can wait as I was in no hurry but now I wish I had said ship it. Others I have bought from them have been pretty good and I'm happy with them.

I'd like to get a 37-116 but they are too expensive for me. I got a pretty good deal on my 38-2. I recently got a 91 off ebay for 20.00 but the shipping was a killer at 85.00 but still a good deal. Turns out speaker is pretty much a loss. Bad coil and transformer.

Thanks Dan, just wondering how easy the new one is to read! I don’t know how much a 37-116 can be found for today, haven’t really looked. I got mine for $125 which I didn’t think was bad but I had to travel out of state for a 6 hour round trip for it! Yeah that $85 shipping is a killer, it’s getting crazier as time goes on!

I have found all the dials I have from Radio Daze easy to read. If you like I can let you know how my 38-2 looks when I get it.

Thanks that would be great. If the new version is more like my original, I might consider buying one!

I received my new 38-2 dial. I'm a little disappointed. As you can see in the picture the blues have a white shadow. The red is too bright and hard on the eyes. The blacks are ok. The picture on the web site is much better looking. Not so sure if I want to use the new one.

Hi Dan, your original dial appears to be lighter, easier to allow light through. My original is similar except it’s cracked and broken in a few spots. I guess I will keep the new one I got but like you, not really pleased with it.

Hi Ron, I have sent Radio Daze my concerns with the dial so I guess we will see. They used my original to make the reproduction. I also found the inner diameter too be a little bit bigger therefore it won't stay in the slot that locks the dial to the dial drum. I sure hope they can correct this otherwise I will have to use the original.

Honestrly, the original is quite acceptable and, it seems to me, can be cleaned.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
