Philco 91 code 221
#1

I have been restoring one of these sets and switched it on yesterday. It didn't exactly spring into life, but after a couple of adjustments was working quite well. One of the repairs I had to do was to rewind the section of the oscillator coil which is in the cathode circuit of the 36 osc/1st detector tube. Today, the oscillator has stopped and try as I might, I can't get it to go again. I have checked all the components & coils and there is nothing that is obviously wrong. Has anyone got any suggestions please?

Dirty tube pins and socket, cold solder joint, stray tiny strand of wire, clean the entire area around the oscillator tube with cotton swab. Get rid of that chassis gremlin. The hardest problems to fix are the ones we cause.

Chassis grounds thru rivets is another good place to look. Oh and the stator screws on the tuning cap where the leads attach.

I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts

figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

I have quite a red face! Thanks for the replies. It turns out that I was the cause of the trouble as suggested. It was as simple as having the 36 cathode winding connected in the wrong polarity. The wireless is now performing very well, & I've learned a little more.
