Stain and varnish recommended?
#2

Nope, wood dyes, grain filler, tone spray, and lacquer are though. That cabinet does not really look that bad, but then again I can't see the top and sides.

Here's a post from a few yrs ago about grain filling: https://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread.php?tid=3461

Toners can purchased from Mohawk  https://www.mohawk-finishing.com/product...sic-toner/

Sanding sealer:  https://www.mohawk-finishing.com/product...ng-sealer/

Grain filler: https://www.mohawk-finishing.com/product...r-solvent/  I'm pretty sure this is an oil based filler vs a water based one. Oms (odorless mineral spirits) is typically used a thinner. The toner and sanding sealer are lacquer base so lacquer thinner is the way to go if you have to remove them. With lacquer products there's 60/60 rule. Has to be above 60deg F and humidity below 60%. If it's too cold the paint won't lay right and have little dot shaped holes. If too humid it will develop a white haze sort of a cloudiness. There is a fix for called No Blush.

Top coat: https://www.mohawk-finishing.com/product...ish-clear/  I like the semi gloss, the gloss is way glossy!

On the grain filler you might want to practice on the some scrap wood stripped veneer just get the hang of it. From Ron's post there is a bit of a learning curve/art to it.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got it!
