Something missing from this 46-1209 tuning shaft
#1

I'm looking at this 46-1209 console for a friend, and the first thing to correct is the lack of tuning. Looking at the underside of the chassis it's obvious something is missing from the end of the tuning shaft, perhaps a gear to mesh with the gear on the tuning cap. Can someone give me a clue as to how this might be repaired, or maybe steer me toward a suitable replacement tuning cap? Thanks.

I have a 47-1230 - VERY similar model to the 46-1209.
here are some pictures of the shaft how it is on my chassis:

sorry about poor quality; none of these pictures were taken with the intention of focusing on the shaft. We can still see there's supposed to be a gear there.

Look in the cabinet to see if maybe it fell but is still present somewhere?

I am uncertain how to fix it; you would need a suitable gear, or a shaft assembly, or a tuning cap. These radios were pretty solid and most ones I saw were complete/working or restorable. Being console in format they don't sell too high; finding a replacement part for this might be more problematic than a whole set. I am thinking a suitable gear is more easily obtainable. Others might chime in with more viable solutions.

There was a 47-1230 chassis on ebay lately; I wonder who got it. I was interested in "spares" in general... Its tuning cap assembly would be a valid replacement for the 1209, I assume.

This isn't much help, but it looks like that gear at the back of the tuning shaft was held in place with a C-clip:

As Marsupial mentioned, a donor chassis will furnish what you need. I'm afraid I don't have a parts chassis like that, sorry.

Thanks for the input so far. There have been a couple of caps replaced under the chassis but no signs of significant repair. However, something bad has happened to this chassis, as several of the pushbutton shafts have been sheared off in addition to this problem with the tuning shaft. The P/B assembly is not a big deal, but if I can't get the radio to physically tune a station it won't be worth repairing. Too bad, since I jumped in some new filter caps last night, repaired the broken speaker cable and was able to get some radio "noise" out of it, so it could live if I can find a fix for the tuning shaft. Does the gear on the end of the dhaft have to rotate or can it be afixed to the shaft? Maybe I could solder a gear to the end of the shaft. I realize I would lose some of the fine-tuning capability but at least it would work after a fashion.

I don't think you'd be loosing any fine tuning ability. I am thinking the gear is fixed to the shaft - they turn together. If you can't find a proper replacement, having a gear permently fixed to the shaft seems logical.

I agree with Ron, there appears to be a C-clip on the end of the tuning shaft. My thought is that is is there to hold the shaft in place in the chassis. As it is now the shaft just pulls right out of the front of the chassis. There must have been some means to hold it in place. So I could fasten a gear to the end of the shaft but I would still need some means to keep the shaft in place in the chassis. It looks like it will best to try to locate an original replacement; all my inquiries have netted nothing so far.

Mars, thanks for the pictures. Just for grins, do you have dimensions for the gear like diameter and tooth spacing? Thanks.

does the 46-1213 have a similar tuning shaft than the 1209? The cabinet, dial, knobs are all different from what I see looking for it...
