RCA Model 140P024 restoration starts
#1

Hey everyone, I’ve decided to change things up and restore one of my old TVs, an RCA model 140P024 with a KCS120E chassis. I’m curious if anyone has worked on this model before, as I’m having trouble removing the outer metal cover. I’ve ordered the Sams for it and grabbed a couple of pages from Radio Museum. Here’s a photo of the set—any help would be greatly appreciated. The Sams folder is set 460.

Sincerely Richard

I have one very similar to this. I want to say the case slides forward but honestly never had mine apart. It used to work, but I think the vertical was a bit jittery. Had it since a teenager. It did produce a pretty good picture, but haven't had it on for years. Sure it needs the caps replaced. Maybe it's time to grab mine and we can have a parallel thread :-)

I also have it's little sister.

It seems we both dealing with an RCA140 Icon_smile

be careful, they are tricky.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Rich, we might both need to look for a Shango066 video. Seems I recall him working on several different versions of these. Mine is a 14, yours looks bigger but may be the picture. It's possible the tube is bolted to the front and slides out of the yoke, which is probably stuck on the neck of the tube. Lemme do some digging ;-)

Hey Mike, get yours on here and lets make it a triple! I been itching to work on a project with a big tube!

Hello Tim,
I went through Shango's videos but couldn’t find one that matched mine. For my set, I just want to remove the white sheet metal so I can start the recapping process. There must be an easy way to take the cover off to check and replace the tubes. I’ll share a few photos later this evening, as I’m on a time crunch to get things done before heading back to work at the end of August.

Today I’m making a reader board sign holder from PVC pipe and fixing the battery ground on my dad’s Dodge truck.

Sincerely Richard
P.S. Mike let's see your RCA 140 ? Tim you might have better luck finding that video anyway I am burning daylight back to a list of stuff to do for my dad and family .

I have a rca pt30. The picture tube and chassis slides out the front of the metal housing.

Rich, I found mine after quite some digging. I've had it in a box since before my boy was born (he's a college graduate now). I have an excuse to start restoring it now, but got to get my Zenith radio finished and off the bench 1st. Here's a few pics. It's different than either pictured, but similar. I have a video tape of this playing when I was about 18. I'm planning retirement now, so I've had it for a few years  Icon_biggrin

It's a model 14-s-7070G
I've got quite a few that I want to get done soon - bucket list ya know ...

The thing that scares me is it looks like mine is full of those "Automatic" IF cans - ya know, the kind with the SMD? It's always been in a dry place and boxed to protect from rodents, so hopefully I can bring it up on a dim bulb to check things before the recap starts. I'll start my own thread so as not to hijack yours. Mike, jump in here too. Lets have some Hi Volt fun :-)

Hello Tim and Mike,
Here are some photos of my TV after removing the cover. There are tons of coupling capacitors to work on, and only a couple of weeks left to finish. The crazy thing is, the picture tube tests really well, and it looks like all the capacitors are original. After talking with the original owner, I don’t think this set has had a lot of hours on it.

Hello Tim,
Yeah, I know the feeling. I could have started with my National 7-inch, but my brother, who gave it to me, wants to see it running alongside my Sony Walkman TVs and a console. I think I have about a dozen TVs. Funny enough, the green cabinets in the background are from my repair shop, and I even have photos from the ’50s showing them.

Here is a front view of the set and you really can see the cabinets

That's really neat Rich! I still have a lot of stuff from my TV repair days, both from the large company I worked for and my own adventure when the local shop closed. I'd say mine is an earlier model since it looks to be hand wired rather than PC boards. Sure wish I could find someone or some way to straighten the gold trim on the front of mine, but judging from the lack of a carrying strap and one elongated ring, it's probably taken a pretty hard bump at some point. I really don't think many of these "portables" were used much, since they were big and heavy, and smaller lighter portables came on the scene in the early 60's. Most were probably in kitchens or maybe bedrooms. The one in the family rooms were the ones that got all the hours on them! Ya know, what you gonna watch, the small 8" or 14"? Or the big 21"  Icon_biggrin

In many homes, the 8" or 14" job sat on top of the big 21" when the big 21" bought the farm and dad couldn't throw it out because of how much he spent on it.

When I was a kid of 21, my neighbor adopted 2 Vietnamese kids. Randy came into this country not speaking a word of English. One year later:

John, John, fix TV. Daddy pay you $10. Don't fix Black White TV, fix Color TV!!!

Randy, you are an American Kid!!!

He grew up to be an engineer. I believe that Angela is a nurse.
