Philco 38-7 CS restoration
#31

I finished repairing the panel and applied some new veneer. I wanted to use some flat cut like the original, but only had quarter cut on hand.

I used the old trick of applying wood glue to both surfaces and letting them dry. Then used heat to reactivate the glue while applying pressure with a J-roller.

Once the grain filler dries overnight, I'll start on the lacquer.

Great work, once I get my 71 up and running I'll be working on the many cabinets that need attention. Your work is very inspiring.

Yes, I like this series of entries too! Great work on your cabinet!

Thanks guys!
I sprayed some toner and clear gloss on the panel. Then, painted the edges dark brown.
I painted the sides of the speaker slats dark brown too.

I gave the whole cabinet a light sanding with 400 grit then spray on a couple more coats of Deft gloss. I'll wait a couple weeks then rub it out.
I'm also going to go over the dark brown paint on the edges with some satin lacquer to knock down the shine.

Looks like you've done a fine job with that cabinet. It appears to be coming along quite nicely. Icon_thumbup

The back porch looks like it cleaned out nicely as well.

That's actually up in the attic. There's a convenient exhaust fan nearby but it's not heated so I only have a short window left before it's too cold to spray.

Oh well then the attic came out nicely as well as the cabinet, that linoleum looks like it got mopped down.

Did you apply a stain before you applied the grain filler? If so, how? by brush or rag?

Thanks,
#41

Nope, no stain - just a little lacquer sanding sealer. I used Mohawk Medium Brown Walnut toner lacquer to give it some color.

Great! I am using this as my guide for my first resto... Keep up the good work!!

Thanks. I think I'll pull out the chassis soon and finally try to get it running Icon_smile

Have fun with the cone-centric tuning! Icon_wink

Wow! I can't believe it's been 3 years since I started this project! I did slight sanding and sprayed on a couple final coats of gloss lacquer yesterday. I'm very happy with how this cabinet turned out will be installing the restored chassis soon Icon_smile
