The 38-7XX grille is exactly the same size as those wonderful Velvet Elvis paintings that one can find for sale on street corners and in front of gas stations everywhere. If you use the velvet elvis for the grillecloth and add a black light pilot light the effect is stunning. The local kids tell me it would look even better if I smoked one of those little pink cigarettes they roll themselves, but I tell them I would rather dip copenhagen, and that smoking will stunt their growth and make their fingers yellow. That always cracks them up. Kids these days.........
If there are no velvet elvis' available, the unicorn painting or the dogs playing poker are good grillecloth replacements too!
But under no circumstances install a painting of those spaceships from the first Boston album. That would look silly.

Replaced the 6k5g tube and now it picks up stations but the volume is all the way up and I barely hear it.I have a 5 foot antenna and touching the antenna does not change the sound as it has with the other philco I have.I notice when I turn the radio on that at first its very loud then goes quiter in a few seconds.Maybe the 6k5g tube is bad?

Replaced the 6k5g tube and got some stations but at a very low volume rate,Except when I first turn it on its good but quickly gets quieter. I havent replaced the caps going to that tube yet, but im wondering if the new tube is bad? It has a 5 foot antenna which works fine on my 38-9 philco and If I touch the antenna it does not change the sound like on the 38-9.Not sure whats wrong....

I would question whether the 70+ year old caps and resistors are bad before a new tube. Without replacing those it's pretty much a waste of time trying to troubleshoot what's wrong with it.

Looking good.
This may have been mentioned but be careful the dial lamps are the correct ones. Too hot and they will burn the dial. They seem bright in the pics.
