42-1008 speaker/turn table question
#1

I would like to replace the speaker with something new. What should I choose? I am also thinking of removing the turn table and installing a modern one - should I? If not, where can I find a new needle?

How about the Cerwin Vega 12" dual-voice?

A modern 12-inch PM speaker will NOT work in this set without some power supply modifications. The original speaker (part no. 36-1528 ) is an electrodynamic type and the filed coil is also the filter choke in the power supply. The field coil D.C. resistance is 1,000 ohms and the voice coil impedance is 5.1 ohms.

Try Play Things of Past (http://www.oldradioparts.com) for a possible replacement speaker or a junker set on ebay. Same speaker is also used in the 42-1009. A compatible speaker (part no. 36-15224 or 36-1565) was also used in Models 42-1012, 1013, but with a slightly lower field coil resistance of 860 ohms. A suitable power resistor could be added in series with it to compensate.
