Philco 37-361

Turned on the radio after replacing the 6f6g tube and only get a squealing out of the speaker or faint humm. Just have an old piece of wire connected to the number 1 slot on the back. New to this any advice would be appreciated.

1. There is no such model as a 37-161. It is a 37-61 (USA), or 37-361 (Canada).

2. Have you replaced the paper and electrolytic capacitors?

My error, it's is a 37-361. New to this. Have not replaced them. Will do that.

Please do...you don't want to run the risk of burning out your set's power transformer, especially since it has the rectifier on top.

I now have all capacitor replacements for the radio. Need advice. Both Electrolytic capacitors near the Rectifier have multiple wires and I am not sure how the new capacitors are wired into the existing wires. Any help would be appreciated.

I do have the schematic, both for the 37-361 and the 37-61.

OK Chuck

Looking at the 37-61 schematic...I see three electrolytics.

The input filter, (44) on the schematic, connects differently from the other two in that the negative does not connect to ground - it connects to B- at the center tap of the high voltage secondary. The negative leads of the other two electrolytics (42) and (20) connect to ground.

The positive lead of (44) connects to the junction of one of the 5Y4G filament terminals, one leg of resistor (19), and the green-white-tracer lead of the speaker field coil.

The positive lead of (42) connects into the set's B+ distribution line by way of the other side of the speaker field coil and the white lead of the audio output transformer.

The positive lead of (20) connects to the junction of resistors (13) and (19).

If the electrolytics mounted where (44) and (42) were originally placed have multiple wires coming out of them, then they are not the original cans.

Ron it is number 42 on the schematic. The can had no wires coming from it but a white and brown with yellow trace soldered to the capacitor. I have the new capacitor and need to know if I simply solder one wire to each end of the capacitor
The white wire goes to the speaker and the other to the 6f6g tube. I am keeping the can for looks only. I will work on number 44 next.

I am assuming you are not restuffing the original electrolytic cans...

Try connecting the positive of (42) to the screen grid (pin 4) of the 6F6G tube socket. Negative to chassis ground.

The wires are connected as you suggest. I cut them off at the bottom of the Electrolytic capacitor can. Both were connected to the same single pole coming out of the bottom of the can. The new capacitor has two leads, one on each end. Do I connect both wires to one end and ground the other or does each end get one of the wires?
