X2 safety capacitor for38-10 philco
#1

I wish to install an X2 safety capacitor across the 120V.A.C. lines on my Philco for better performance. Problem is, I don't know what capacitence to use, nor were to get such a small item without paying an absurd minimal order fee. If there are any other specs needed to obtain the proper part, I would be interested in them as well.

The 38-10 already has two .015 caps going from each leg of the AC line to ground (see part #47). It would not be a bad idea to replace those with Y safety caps since they are going to ground, you'd use X safety caps if going across the line. You can buy safety caps rated X1/Y2 so you can use them in either application.

I usually get mine from Mouser because I don't think they have a minimum and their shipping is reasonable, plus I usually find several other caps and components to stock up on. Here is a link to some .01 line rated X1/Y2 caps that will work well for your application:

Here are some that are even cheaper, and I'm pretty sure those are what I've used before:

JustRadios also sells safety caps but they have a minimum order of $20 but they do have good info on safety caps:

Tod, yes a good idea to change those out. This action does beg the question, have you changed out the rest of the caps? Particularly the electrolytics, wax caps and checked for resistors that are out of value?
