Has anyone seen this coin-op?
#1

This is listed on craigslist for $95. Not working, no key. I'm sorely tempted, but a little leery. He says he has a half dozen of these pulled from the Mapes Hotel-this is the best one.
It looks like a Setchell Carlson conversion, but I haven't seen one like it.
Think it's worth the price?

Looks to be intact. I'm not sure what they are worth, but you can bet any coin op radio is rare considering that most were probably junked with the notels they were in. I've only seen one in the flesh my whole lofe.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Upon closer perusal, I see something missing on this set. There's a bracket on the side, which presumably held a pillow speaker, which is not in evidence. That could sour the deal. Anyone have a source for vintage pillow speakers?

Why not ask the seller if he has a pillow speaker from one of the others?

I told him I'd call in the morning, and that's a question I'll definitely be asking.I suspect the answer will be negative, but there's always hope...

I used to think that coin operated radios were something unusual but they seem to come up more often then you would think. One thing to keep in mind is that they were usually overbuilt using steel or heavy duty wooden cabinets. This example looks like it uses the same chassis as one of the Setchel Carlson "frog" models, what that means in terms of rarity I don't know. To be honest I think $94 is a little steep for something like this, especially if it's DOA, when you get down to it you still have a five or six tube AC/DC set inside.

I talked to him this morning. He thought the metal bracket that holds the speaker when not in use was the antenna. He had no idea that there was a pillow speaker involved. He doesn't remember seeing any around, but he's making a trip to the 'barn' in a couple of days and search around. He's also going to count the number of these radios he has. Maybe I'll try to cut a package deal with him ... Sounds like this barn is chock full of stuff. Could be a good episode for 'American Pickers'!

Check your PMs, concerning a coin op.

Don, indulge my ignorance, what do you mean by the PM's?
