New Acquisition from Lexington
#1

Even though I already have a 116B, I couldn't pass up this one at Lexington today...

Notice something missing?

While you're trying to figure out what's missing, here are some more photos.

Figured it out yet? Yes, the band switch knob is missing, and the band switch shaft appears to be missing also. But if you looked at the under-chassis photo, you can see that the band switch is in place.

Let's take a closer look:

Now, compare that with how it should look in this photo by Richard G. Hines from the "116 Dial Drive Rebuilding" page on my site:

The piece that attaches to the band switch outside the chassis is made so that the dial scale fits inside it, and has a shaft of its own which goes through the cabinet front panel, and to which the knob is attached.

This piece is broken on this 116.

I think I have one in my stash o'stuff. I hope so, anyway.

The chassis looks "barn fresh," but also looks like someone tried to work on it in the recent past. Pretty grungy. The band switch is frozen in place, as is the tuning condenser.

This could be a challenging project. The cabinet is in good shape overall, just needing to be properly refinished. It's the chassis that may be a challenge.

That does not look to bad. I am getting ready to restore one given to me free!!! The cabinet was restored but they did the sides dark almost black. I have seen 116B's with dark sides and with light sides. Which is correct? From what is can tell the chassis on mine is untouched, I brought it up on the varic last night and it sounds factory fresh, no hum and very sensitive on all bands. I will go thru it and make it my new daily driver.

Yeah, Joe, I couldn't resist as the price was definitely right. Good to see you, too! Icon_thumbup

Skip - Well, no, you can't beat free. The sides/top should be dark. If there is an Ultra Classic (dye) equivalent to Extra Dark Walnut (Tone Finish - pigment) which would allow some of the grain to show, that would be the perfect replacement, I think. Medium Walnut looks good on the front panel.

Thanks Ron, then mine looks real close. I do need a new decal, do you know which set from radio daze will work? If not can you give me the dimensions of the decal?

Thanks

Ron, did you get that from Terry? It seems like I recall hauling that back from Kutztown a meet or two back when he bought it.

Skip - DCL-PH8 is the correct PHILCO decal for 1932-1936 and some early 1937 models.

John (Eliot) - Yes, I bought it from Terry, and he did mention that he picked it up at Kutztown.
