A rediscovered Silvertone
#1

A call from my mom last week saying the bathroom sink wouldn't drain, led to a Saturday in the basement of their home replacing dwv lines for me!!! What fun!! Anyway, a lot of the sets from my early days of collecting reside in that basement. This one was off in a corner all but forgotten until I rediscovered it yesterdayIcon_clap So after cleaning up this morning, I dragged it out of there and brought it home! It's just like getting a new find except I didn't have to pay anything for it!!!!!
It's a Silvertone 4586, a ten tube set which, as I remember, didn't cost me anything back in the late '80s either. My mom found this one sitting by the curb for garbage pick up, so she loaded it up and brought it home for me! This was quite a big deal, as my mom wasn't very fond of my hobby in those daysIcon_lol
So, here it is at it's new home.

Looks like a good rediscovery.I really like that dial face. Are you going to restore it? MIke

Appears to be a 1936 model.... found a video of one on YouTube:

I love the "magic" green tuning eyes those Silvertones used. My 1938 has one too... a 6U5 tube I believe (going by memory).

This is my set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se21DYYGqTg

That dial's a real eye catcher. Nice.

NostalgiaRadioTime,

That radio looks so much like this one, but it's a bit different. The dial is different, with the broadcast band in the inner ring, instead of the outer ring like this one. Interesting difference...

You're right Brenda! I hadn't looked that closely at the dial. Good eye!

BrendaAnnD,
I did a little research on this model Silvertone. Turns out that Silvertone used two different chassis types manufactured by two different companies. one by Colonial and the other by Stewart-Warner, which accounts for the slight differences in the dials due to tracking. Also the Stewart-Warner chassis has the tuning knob off to the right, whereas the Colonial chassis tuning knob is directly below the dial. My silvertone has the Colonial make chassis.
Mike,
I do intend on fully restoring this set. it will be quite a challenge though, as the cabinet has quite a few issues, i.e. loose joints, delamination on the sides and missing veneer. It is a very attractive radio and well worth the effort to bring her back.

Hope you can find time to post some pics as you go through the set. Good luck. Mike
