Three radios for 30 bucks

Picked up three radios today. 2 Philco consoles and a Gloritone 27. The Philcos are a 40-195 I'll either sell or use for parts. The other is a Model 14MX. I like the 14MX and will probably keep and restore. Any pertinent info on this model? I like the art deco styling.

The 40-195 cabinet is rough, the chassis is complete except for the dial pointer and string. The Gloritone seems complete and has some veneer issues. The 14MX has veneer issues on the sides and top, the speaker cone is toast, and it is missing some of the trim near the bottom.

Well, even if it were sawn in half, for 10 bucks a pop that's as good as free.

Very nice scores and those prices were a steal! I have the Mantola version of your Gloritone 27 in a more ornate cabinet. A few collectors I know around here call those the 'outhouse radio' because of its shape. (Actually, they use a more colorful term)

"Outhouse radio". Yep, that's what it looks like. I was going to sell it off, all I really wanted out of the 3 was the 14MX, but the wife likes it and wants it restored....so I'll add it to the ever growing list of projects.
Seller was a guy I used to work with years ago. He sold me a Philco model 90 Baby Grand last year for 60 bucks.

That 14MX is very nice! It's from early 1934, and is the first Philco to use hex knobs and that escutcheon, both of which were carried over into the 1935 season.

Ron, is that 14MX (or 18MX...haven't counted the tubes yet) a particularly hard to find item? According to the Philco gallery there were only a little over 6,400 made of the 14MX, 18MX, and 118MX made alltogether. Uncommon or not, I really do like that Art Deco styling. It'll definitely be a keeper.
My escutcheon has a little damage. Is anyone reproducing that one?

I would say yes. I can't recall ever seeing one of these "up close and personal." Of those I have seen online, it has been mostly 118MX sets with very few 14MX models. I don't think I've ever seen an actual photo of an 18MX.
No one is reproducing that escutcheon, as far as I know. That particular style of Philco escutcheon has had a habit of getting damaged to a greater or less extent over time.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. It's not too bad though. Gives me another item to look for when scouring the earth for pieces/parts. From what I can tell, the only real difference between the 14MX and 18MX is the chassis. One has 9 tubes and the other 8. I was originally thinking this one was a 14, but I'll get home tonight and do a tube (and tube socket) count to be sure. The labels are inside, but the very top portion of the one stating the model number has been torn off. No other stickers or decals that I could find in a cursory inspection. Either way i'm happy.

oops, you wrote about it. Never mind. About the cone damage.
Also, could you repair the escutcheon by cutting a piece of a dense black paper or plastic and glue it in and then maybe a coat of lacquer? It is not too bad.

A little question on the Gloritone. Does it have a 45 or a 47 for the output tube? Early versions like my Mantola used the 45 and the later production used the type 47.

Great find!! I picked up a 14MX last summer off CL for $35. It's in pretty good shape but is missing the bottom trim too. Steve here on the Phourm told me that he thought he could make up some for my set. I just needed to send him a small section so he could get all the sizing info. Haven't gotten to it yet and at the time Steve was making some changes to his wood shop so it would be a little while before he could get started on this project.
For some reason the guy I got it from decided to dissemble the cabinet so everything that had screws holding it together is now apart. I'll need to run over to Lowes and grab a few handfuls of wood screws. Not quite sure when I'm going to dive into this project I think I hear the 116X calling or is it two 116X's???

Now that you have a 14MX now you've got to get a 60 or 66MB to go with it!!! I'd go for the 66MB it has much better SW coverage.

I'd give it top priority. That she wants it restored shows that she understands our hobby here, and doing it soon should help maintain marital bliss and shows you  her and all sorts of good stuff....
