In honor of D Day
#1

As a kid in the 50's I remember the incredible amount of WW II
surplus equipment available to the public.
This included every type of electronic equipment imaginable and it
was labeled JAN (joint Army-Navy) made by Philco, GE, RCA,
Ken Rad, National Union, Westinghouse and others.
Its amazing how sophisticated and dependable this equipment was from an industry barely out of its infancy, I guess it had to grow up
very fast.

I have a lot of war time issued tubes, VT's. I look at some of the old timers left from WW2 and they remind me of my Dad. Did what they had to do. My father told me that not only did most people celebrate the war ending but that a lot sort of viewed the Depression and the War as one big trial, they finally felt like things were looking up. We would not have what we do if they had failed.

All tube-radio aficionados need a small, clean JAN example, like an ARC-5 receiver or transmitter. They represent the most perfect examples of beautifully hand-wired electronics. Having aluminum chassis', they can be found looking just like the did 70 years ago.
