My new 39-55
#1

Okay guys, you talked me into itIcon_lol! I just got my latest Craigslist find home a few minutes ago. Here are some quick pics. Haven't even had much time to look at it but it looks pretty clean inside. It has a few cabinet issues but nothing I can't fix. Cabinet styling doesn't do much for me but it IS a Mystery Control set and for $65 I'm pretty happy about itIcon_clap Gotta go and figure out where to put this beast!

Those pics were so quick that I completely missed them...

But seriously, congratulations! Icon_clap Icon_thumbup

Oops! Sorry about that. I'm running around trying to get things put away before it gets too dark. Getting absent minded in my advancing yearsIcon_redface! I took the mystery control cover off and it appears to have the original bettery pack still installed as well as a Philco 30 Tube, pretty neat. Also the wiring is still in beautiful condition.

It is also pretty clean. Congrats!

I see the Mystery Control frequency is a Code 6 on the radio chassis rear. Is there a corresponding "6" inside the Mystery Control? If so, then, the MC is the original to the set. Otherwise the MC can be re-tuned to match your set. BatteryMaker, a member here, can provide a repro MC control battery for you.

Good catch,

Chuck

Yes, there is a number 6 stamped on the serial number label.

Very nice when you get the set and original control with Mystery sets.

Patience is needed, as you can see from the chassis. ;)

Good luck,

Kevin,

Nice score! If you need any parts let me know I still have a junk chassis and a bunch of parts from two other chassis that came from a 39-116 and a 40-205 which also were mystery control sets. I have restored a 39-55 and a 39-116 you're going to love replacing all that crumbling wiring.

Looks quite nice! Congrats on scoring it complete with the controller! I have a mystery control model an old gentleman gave me a few years back, but he never had the control.

No matter where you go, there you are.

That's not too bad of a find since it has the control box still with it, too bad about the large chip out of the door. With regard to the battery for the control I'm not sure whether Mr. Morris the Batterymaker still makes those, he does still have the artwork however.

Hi
Nice Radio, Icon_clap I have the 39-116 with the remote. I have the radio working I recapped it and replace a lot of the rubber wire. Icon_surprised It is a good reciever and the audio is very good. I think the 39-55 has the same audio as the 39-116. Icon_think The 39-116 has a shortwave band and that is the only diff I think. So I think you will like the sound of the radio. I do. I need to get the remote working but I am lazy I guess. Icon_wink I have to get a battery before I can check it tho.

Thanks guys! I'm pretty happy with it overall. The chassis looks to be in very good shape, but I haven't had a chance to pull it out and look underneath yet. I had my first taste of replacing crumbling wire with my 40-150 so not in much of a hurry to start on this one! May be a winter project. The cabinet does have some veneer issues, but I enjoy working on the cabinets anyway, so I pretty confidant I can fix them.
So, I'm just going to clean it up and put it on the back burner for now. I will post some pics of the chassis when I get it out.

No the 39-116 also has a tuned RF amplifier stage, and it has three bands as opposed to the 39-55 which only has the AM broadcast band. Basically the radio section uses six tubes, the remote receiver uses four tubes, and while it has push pull outputs it looks like they used the screen grid inversion trick like they did on the 40-180. One other good thing about this set is that the grille cloth looks like it's in good condition which is always a bonus.
