Interesting custom Philco cabinet
#1

Looks like they stuck a mid-30's Philco in this custom cabinet. Would this have been possible to get from a dealer back then?

There were several cabinet-makers back then who offered custom cabinets for different radios. Do not believe that this was a dealer option, but it is possible that some dealers had relationships with these cabinet makers.

I have a Philco 116 chassis/speaker that has been installed in a "custom" highboy cabinet. What is interesting is that the period Philco "chevron" grillecloth was used with this set.

Is that Norman Braithwaite's custom 37-660? Looks just like it. Photo here:

+1 what Tom (TA) said regarding the custom cabinets.

It could be, a friend just sent the picture and said he saw this a few years ago. He thought it was interesting.

I have no problem collecting "custom" sets like this. They are interesting and often house higher-end radios. This makes sense, since the owner was spending a fair amount on the cabinet.

I just purchased this "Heron" with an old Airline (circa 1930) from Willie. Its not here yet but I plan to install a Scott Super XII in it which is unique for a Scott with the amp on the main chassis.

Furniture back in those day could best be described as "busy" or "gaudy" nothing sleek or minimalist. Old homes with bad taste furnishings like this are definitely not my style, reminds me of the house in Singing in the Rain or some of the old Three Stooges shorts done in this type of mausoleum home complete with matronly women. The comic strip Blondie after all these years finally replaced a TV with legs like this with a flat screen HDTV because few of their readers would have known what it was

The Airline chassis inside Bruce's cabinet looks almost identical to the chassis I saw recently in a Canadian Westinghouse model 80 right down to that tube shield behind the tuning condenser. Is the chassis actually branded as an Airline or is that just the name on the dial escutcheon? The Westinghouse was a 1930 model by the way, so the custom cabinet suits the tastes of the late 1920s and very early 30s though I don't like overly ornate cabinets myself.

Very nice specimen. IMHO Please pass it on to museum when you are finished enjoying it.

Oh Bruce, you knocked it out of the park on that radio. It is so nice.
Your choice as to change out the radio itself but that looks great. Congrats.
