Philco grommets
#1

Posted this at ARF, figure I'd ask here also. Does anyone have any further info on which models would use these grommets? Pic #1 came from my 116B. I know this particular grommet is used in the 116B 640, 650 660 and possibly the 680 set. Any more models that use it? Also there is a grommet used in the 610 620 and 630 sets which looks identical to pic #1, but slightly smaller. Are those the only models? These are used at the front of the chassis for support between the chassis and cabinet.

Pic #2 came from a 37-610 set. I know these are used on 37-610, 37-620 and 37-630 sets along with a few 38 series. Any further sets/models that use them? These are at the front of the chassis. They slide over the tone & volume shafts and are used as spacers between the chassis and cabinet.

Would appreciate any info gents.

Let's see...

Grommet #1 -
Large size, Models 116, 640, 641, 643. 645, 650, 651, 655, 660, 665. I would assume 680 also.
Smaller size, Models 610, 611, 620, 623, 624, 625, 630, 635, 642.

Grommet #2 -
It's easier to list the 1937 models that DID NOT use these, and they are: 37-33, 37-84, 37-93, 37-600, 37-602, 37-604. All other 1937 Philcos used these.

Thanks Ron. Besides the 37s that used them, any 38 series models?

Hmmm...being too tired to look it up in detail, I would say all 1938 models EXCEPT Models 38-12, 38-14, 38-15, 38-33, 38-35, 38-93.

What, are you about to go into production of these, or something? Icon_biggrin

Blacksmith (Renovated Radios) already offers the 1936 grommets...

Hmmm... Ive never had any old Philco sets with any orig type rubber-grommets that fit over control-shafts separating chassis from cabinet! Perhaps I missed something here? I have had to replace rubber-grommets in several Philco "mid chassis" sets during restoration, but have never ran across any sets using rubber grommets "up-front" on control shafts, perhaps my originals were missing? Mr. Texas, here are a few pics. I believe Ed (Blacksmith) has these, but he may not have loaded a pic yet. And yes, they come up missing often. While not critical, they help "space" the chassis from the cabinet. Usually one goes over the volume shaft, and the other over the tone shaft.

EDIT: Yes, Ed has them listed on his site now.

BDM,... Thanks for that info!! It makes perfect sense that those type grommets would have been used over front shafts for "positioning" issues in aligning the vintage Philco chassis with the cabinets! I have restored many, many vintage 1936-37 Philcos thru the yrs, and never knew I had parts "missing"!! Guess whoever serviced all my vintage Philco sets many yrs ago, never took time to reinstall them!! I learn something new everyday!! Thanks for taking time to post the photos!! I have had good luck before, by carefully positioning the old Philco chassis back into orig cabinets, without using any grommets over the shafts. I can also understand where these orig type grommets would have been used over the shafts to "secure" the chassis to cabinet by Philco for "shipping purposes",... to keep alignment of the dial-scales in place. Just glad to know someone still makes replacements, if I need em!! Thanks again for the knowledge you guys share!!! Randal Icon_wink

Randal, I've founding them missing or rotted more often than not. Another needed grommet are the ones used for the separate "rf chassis" models. Those three grommets are usually rotted, allowing the rf deck to sag, or hard as a rock.

Yes, I agree!! Last time I restored a mid 30s Philco "mid-chassis" unit, I ordered a few "extras" of those hard to find (3 ea set mid chassis) rubber grommets indeed!! I keep those in backstock for the next Philco mid RF chassis requiring them!! Those orig rascals are Always rotted!! These new repro mid-RF-chassis Philco grommets fit like "socks on a Rooster"! They work very well indeed! Back in the early 1980s, I used to "sub" garden hose rubber washers & large flat washers to hold the old Philco "mid chassis's" in place!! Very glad we now have better replacements avail these days!! I never once found a rubber "shaft type" grommet (still remaining) on any vintage 1930s vintage Philco Radios, ever!!, and I have restored many of these vintage sets!! I never knew these rubber grommets were ever used before until now!! They were "missing"!!! Thanks for all you did posting your pics, and now Im "educated" !! All my origs Philcos were missing something I didnt know before!! I usually dont "ship" vintage radios, I have my customers pick them up , so they can hear them "fully electronically restored" working on my workbench before they take them home to enjoy again. However, if I ever have to ship a vintage Philco in the future,(not likely).. those rubber grommets will keep things in perfect "alignment"!! Thanks again for sharing something I didnt know before!! I learn something new everyday, and I appreciate those that further educate me on vintage Philcos!! Sincerely, Randal Icon_wink
