O man now I've done it, Philco 37-116
#31

I don't know how you do it over there Brenda but keep up the great radio work and the help you provide others. It can't be easy or safe to get nice radios over there in one piece.

Agree with everyone, the 37-116 is a very good set!

1. Recommend you spend 7.00 and purchase the package of info that Chuck provides for Philco sets. They are sharp, read-able copies and deal specifically with the model/code you are working on.

2. Mike is right on about "getting to know" your radio. I too will spend a fair amount of time examining the chassis and "how it works." This is time well spent.

3. Take a manilla folder and use it to diagram everything you take apart. Personally, I also draw the base diagrams of every type of tube used in my set at the top of the folder. This is a ready reference when you are tracing wire connections. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of diagramming!!
.
4. Re-stuff of bakelite blocks is definitely the way to go.

5. Electrolytic caps negative side is not always to ground.

6. It is worth the "pita" to remove the RF deck and totally re-cap. Be careful, as there are many very thin wires present.

7. Check resistors and replace IF out of spec. Personally, if it is greater than 10% off, I replace it.

Although you have chosen a difficult set to wok on, you CAN do it if you take your time and do it right. ASK QUESTIONS !!! You will find here on the Phorum some great people who will help you!!!

Update on the 37-116, all of the caps and resistors that needed replacing are done. I have many pictures which I will share to give everyone a better idea on how we handled certain situations. Seems like Photobucket has decided to mis-behave tonight. I'll try and post pictures later tonight or tomorrow. The RF section was not as difficult to do, some components were in tight places but we found ways to get around. The radio is working great without being aligned which is next on the agenda. We are taking the dial assembly apart to clean and lube it and then rebuild the the lamp sockets with Ron's great technique. More of this later.

Very good!! Keep it up!!

third pic from the top, your resistor to the right of the big yellow cap that runs over two tube sockets, it looks like one lead (or both) could use some insulation, unless the projection is playing tricks on me.

The distance is greater than it appears but I think we will put some liquid tape on the leads, thanks for the safety check.

Well it's done and what an experience . I learned so much about electronic restoration and test procedures from this build. Here are some of the final pictures of the finished 37-116.[Image: http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a508...df2394.jpg] as you can see I'm still rolling it around on a furniture cart trying to find the best location for it, don't worry IT won't be the kitchen.[Image: http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a508...4979ae.jpg] the cabinet will remain untouched for now it really looks good.[Image: http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a508...4b270b.jpg] thanks to everyone for your suggestions and encouragement along the way. Now it's on to the 116X

When you cut out the old caps, keep them. You or someone else is going to want them some day.

Congratulations, I am sure you feel like a million bucks right now. And deservingly so. And yes, keep the caps, ESPECIALLY the backelites, but also tubulars that say Philco on them
