bakelite blocks philco 37-630
#1

Want to re-cap the bakelite blocks on a 630 chassis.
As far as I can tell from the schematics, it should have 2 blocks.
THe first one I removed is labeled (I believe) 8378 su.
Has a single cap inside, whereas the schematics say it has two .015 caps.
What gives?
I have .010 and .020 caps.
Should I default higher or lower?
Thanks,

murf, I sent you a PM on the other site. Anyway, I don't think that 8378 is a good number. Probably 8328 which is a single .03 capacitor.

If you are looking at the 2 (each) .015 caps that go across the AC line, they must be safety caps (X1 - Y2 or X2 - Y2). And you are probably going to find .01 replacements.

Well guy's, It looks to me like someone added a block down at the bottom or back side of the chassis.
Nothing shown there on the parts list diagram.
THe power cord is supposed to be wired to the block that is shown on the parts list diagram.
Looks like they added a second block and wired the power cord to that one.
They also did some jerry rigging when they replaced the electrolitics.
Anyway, I replaced the double caps in both blocks and still have the slight distortion.
In fact I now have a squeal if I turn it all the way up on the volume.
THere are a couple caps I could still replace if I dig enough.
Seems to pick up lots of stations, just has a distortion problem.
Tested all tubes and replaced a couple with no luck.
Tried adjusting the alignment a little, but no luck.
Any suggestions from the experts?
Thanks and have a great weekend.

Just Radios has 0.015uF safety caps if you need them.

Why safety caps?
In other words the .02 630 volt caps I put in, need to be replaced?
Could that be causing the squeal at high volume?

Here's the ABC's of safety caps found on the Just Radios site. http://www.justradios.com/safetytips.html

No, no squeal from them.

Yes, either replace them or delete them.

Check the volume control. It can often have an open tap or intermittent causing these problems.
