Philco 91 Speaker Problem
#1

I seem to have a problem with the speaker in my model 91 radio. There is a rumbling or crackling noise especially when the volume is turned up. The spider in the center is vibrating quite a bit when this occurs. I made sure that the screw in the center of the speaker is tight and the surround is solid around the permeter of the speaker. What could be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Charlie

Have you tried to use another speaker instead?
How do you know it is the speaker?
Are there two speakers or just one?
What is the exact model of your 91?

It sounds like the voice coil may be bottoming out. Has the speaker been reconed?

I was thinking the same thing about the voice coil. There is a lot of movement where the spider is located when this happens. Does this means that the speaker will have to be reconed? This model does not have a speaker plug so I would have to remove the speaker wires to remove the speaker from the chassis. Any recommends on where to have the speaker reconded if necessary?

Depending on where you are. I had a good result with The Speaker Shop. There were some recomendations here, some are here in NJ.
