Nice chassis paint
#1

Hi,
I have been removing rust and dust from a 40-195 chassis for a few days now. I sprayed the chassis with a primer to get it ready for the final spray coats. I visited Home Depot and Lowes. Purchased some spray paint at Lowes and after spraying the chassis it just did not look authentic. So this morning I had some errands to run and groceries to buy at Wal-Mart. I figured I would check out their spray paint, I REALLY doubted there would be anything good at all. Oh my I was wrong. They have a GREAT match for my Philco. The brand is Krylon and the color is "nickel." After lightly spraying the topside of the chassis I flipped the old girl over and this paint is almost an exact match to the underside which is still in great shape.

I wanted to put this on the phorum to maybe spare someone the pain in the neck of going from hardware store to hardware store to hardware store. Rochester is 50 miles from me and that is the closest to Home Depot or Lowes I am. My Wal-Mart is 18 miles away. Still a considerable distance for just spray paint but I wish I would have checked there first. Since it is Krylon paint I imagine it is available in other places. I should buy a case to keep on hand. First time in years that I have found a GREAT match.

As always I would recommend to spray a small test area to make sure it matches your particular radio. Have a Great Day. Icon_biggrin

THANK YOU for this great tip! After reading your post, I visited one of my local Wal-Marts (we have two in Evansville) and sure enough, they had the Krylon satin nickel paint!

I had tried a satin silver finish made by Valspar and purchased from Lowes previously, but I do like this satin nickel better. Besides, I feel the Krylon aerosols spray better than other paint brands.

I have begun painting what will become my Super 89 chassis with satin nickel after having primed it this past winter, at the same time I primed and painted my Super 71 chassis.

And you're right - so far, it looks VERY authentic to the color of Philco chassis made from about 1935 and later.

Will post photos later.

Hi Ron,
Excellent, I am glad to hear you found the paint. I was impressed with the way my chassis came out too. I look forward to seeing your pictures. Thanks!

I love to restore antique lighting and Krylon makes a great brass color paint that I use for repainting Icon_wink I'llo try that nickle .

I like the new adjustable Krylon "fan-spray" tips included on the newer Krylon spray cans! You can turn them for horizontal or vertical spraying. Leaves a nice "pro" finish, and reaches those hard to get places also! Go Krylon! Icon_wink
