philco 84 and 84B whats the difference?
#1

I just finished my Philco 84 but I do not know if it is an 84 or an 84B
I
just got my next one on the bench and have the same problem. Is it the same chassis and schematic as my other philco with a different cabinet design?

off the topic, is the grill cloth the original in the unrestored philco? anyone know where to get it if it is?

Here are the 2 radios:

I think either could be 84B.

The left is 1934, the right is 1935 cabinet.
Either one is practically the same as 80jr with a better speaker. 4-tube regen (well, 3 tube, 4th is the 80 rectifier).

The "B" means baby grand/cathedral

so they use the same schematic?

Well...sort of...you need to see what changes were made over the years the 84B was produced.

See: http://www.philcoradio.com/phorum/showth...hp?tid=215 or you can order the info from Chuck @ http://www.philcorepairbench.com/schematics.htm

You're right Ron would know for sure but as morzh said....I think they are both 84Bs, just different years.

1934 84B

1935 84B

The chassis (described as "Model 84" in Philco Service Bulletin 178 ) are similar except for the update changes they made as described in the bulletin

Oh I didn't understand that was what he was saying.

So both are or could be 84B. I pulled the chassis and it is the same so I guess it is just a difference in cabinets

thanks

I should probably speak German....or maybe Russian. I guess my English is too ambiguous. Icon_lol

An 84 is an 84B and vice versa.

As Todd (tab10672) said, the "B" in 84B indicates the type of cabinet used. B = Baby Grand; in this case, cathedral. Model 84 sets were only offered as Baby Grand (cathedral) models.
